Models, loaders and community tools

What is a Desktop Mate mod?

A Desktop Mate mod is third-party content or code that changes the base companion experience. It can be a character replacement, loader, chat feature, visual control, or another tool, with its own author and compatibility risk.

THE FOUR LAYERS

Know what part of Desktop Mate is changing

Character replacement

A community model changes the visible character. Rights, format, loader, and redistribution permission can all be separate questions.

Loader or framework

A loader makes other mods possible by changing how code or models enter the app. Its version can matter as much as the mod version.

Feature mod

A tool can add chat, visibility controls, model switching, or another behavior without being a character pack.

DLC VS MOD

Publisher content and community projects are different

Licensed DLC is distributed through the Desktop Mate Steam ecosystem and has its own publisher listing. A community mod is created by an independent author and can require a loader, a certain build, or manual file changes.

Neither a character name nor a polished preview proves that a model is official. Check who uploaded it, where the file is hosted, whether the author allows redistribution, and whether the page documents the current app version.

This catalog does not include DLC unlockers, “NoSteam” packages, paid-character mirrors, or untraceable reuploads.

Common Desktop Mate mod types

Model replacements change the avatar displayed by Desktop Mate. Loaders provide the mechanism for injecting a model or feature. Feature mods add behavior such as chat integration or mesh visibility. Some projects combine more than one layer.

Read the individual project page before assuming an archive can be copied into the same folder as another mod. The loader, file structure, and supported app build can differ.

How to judge a Desktop Mate mod source

  • Prefer the original creator's GitHub repository or Nexus Mods profile.
  • Look for release history, readable documentation, issues or posts, and a license.
  • Use the original release asset when one exists; do not replace a source-only project with an anonymous executable.
  • Keep the author page visible when a Nexus account is required, because the Files tab also shows permissions and scan information.

Why mod compatibility changes

A Desktop Mate update can change assemblies, rendering, input behavior, file paths, or the assumptions an old loader makes. A model can also depend on one specific loader generation.

Labels such as Legacy, Known broken, Source only, and Unverified describe the evidence available on each project page. They are more useful than a generic “safe” badge.

Download permission is not redistribution permission

A publicly visible model page can still prohibit re-uploading, editing, conversion, or commercial use. Character models can involve the uploader, the source model creator, and a franchise rights holder.

That is why GitHub buttons resolve to original author releases and Nexus buttons stay on the original Files page. A first-party mirror would erase the permissions, revisions, and scan context the user needs.

Desktop Mate mod FAQ

What is a Desktop Mate mod?

A Desktop Mate mod is a community-created project that changes or extends the base app, such as a model replacement, avatar loader, chat integration, or visibility control. It is not automatically official DLC.

Are Desktop Mate mods free?

Many community projects are downloadable without a software price, but each author controls the license and distribution permissions. Free access does not mean unrestricted redistribution.

Do Desktop Mate mods use Steam Workshop?

The Desktop Mate Workshop currently shows no listed items in the source checked for this guide. Documented community projects instead use original GitHub repositories or Nexus Mods pages.

Can a Desktop Mate update break a mod?

Yes. Loaders and mods can depend on app assemblies, file paths, or behavior that changes after an update. Keep a removal and Steam verification plan.
